My Life In Food

sunshine-award

This blog is about food and food memories and every other fantastic and scrumptious thing to do with it.

My appetite and passion for food is large and runs deep, sometimes its indulgent and wild and other times wholesome and simple, often humorous and always immeasurable.

I grew up outside of Boston and spent many hours of my childhood in front of the TV watching Graham Kerr (The Galloping Gourmet) and Julia Child prepare all kinds of luscious meals that would make my mouth water.  Other days I’d follow my mother and two grandmothers around their simple, tidy kitchens as they busily prepared hearty fragrant meals, hand-cut pastas, preserved fruits and vegetables, baked yeasty breads, spicy cookies and frosted lopsided cakes. I was there by their side asking questions and helping where needed and there were plenty of times I was ordered to leave if I was in their way.

It was a given that by the time I graduated High School I would be going off to Johnson & Wales University to study Culinary Arts. Those years were fine and good. I loved the hands on creativeness of cooking whether it be the simple lesson of washing a sink full of colorful salad greens, trussing a chicken or peeling a gorgeous carrot or the complicated lessons of making a French Country Pate or Julia Child’s Cassoulet or making Brioche, it all thrilled me and my dream had arrived.

After a few years of working in restaurants the work was too repetitive for me and realized I found more joy with food when I was cooking for family and friends.

Today I live for the smells that emanate throughout my house when mixing ingredients together and meals are cooking. I adore the practice of selecting produce in markets or local farm stands and the exhilaration from growing my own herbs and vegetables. I enjoy reading about food trends and discovering new recipes and restaurants and finding what part of our planet spices and herbs come from. I take pleasure in the simplicity of browsing through a magazine and looking at photos of food. I groove on learning about the origins of cuisines and love the idea of infusing and combining flavors from other cultures. What could be more electrifying than eating a Korean/Mexican infusion inspired taco or doing a search on the internet for a different kind of marinade and finding, “Judo Joel’s Asian-Infused Jamaican Jerk Marinade” and what’s more exciting than planning your meal, seeking out your ingredients, cooking them, sharing your creation with family and friends and allowing it to nurture your soul on levels that are profound and limitless with each luscious bite you take?

I am the author the published plays The Sweepers and Seven Rabbits on a Pole, both plays been produced off Broadway and around the US. My novel Oliver Pepper’s Pickle was released in August 2011 by Camel Press. I have AS from Johnson & Wales University, a BA  from The University of Massachusetts and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University.

    Hi John,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Diana (Ricci) Christian. I grew up across the street from your Mom, Nina on Federal Av. When I was young, I took your brother Vinnie for walks one summer to relieve your Mom. I am currently friends with your cousin Nancy who I met at PTO meetings when our kids attended the same elementary school many years ago. I, like her taught Biology, but in Boston. Occasionally, I bump into your aunt Diana in the local coffee shop. So I am well acquainted and love the Colletti family. Years ago my Mom went to see your play The Sweepers and raved about it. Can’t remember why I couldn’t make it. I’d love to see either of your plays if they are performed in the area again or in NYC for that matter. My daughter and her husband are currently living there.
I recently read your article in the South Shore magazine. I decided to check out your web site and hope to try some of the recipes on it and from the South Shore article. I am now reaching out to you for advice since you are living in Rome and I will be travelling there in May with my huband. Can you suggest some of you favorite restaurants? We’ll only be there 3 days but I’d like to hear some of your suggestions. I was in Italy years ago and enjoyed a restaurant in Trastevere (don’t remember the name and it probably isn’t there any more) so something there would be nice. I remember Trastevere as being an old area with a great atmosphere. Please nothing fancy, something local and good.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions; if not I enjoyed and will return to your website for recipes. Hope I get an opportunity to see your plays.
    Diana

PS. We are going to Florence, Venice, and the Amalfi coast, too, so if you have any restaurant suggestions, include them as well. We will go to my Dad’s town in Abruzzi also. I understand you are Abbruzzese as well 🙂

PS I had a couple of glasses of wine a few nights ago and watched some classic Julia Child segments. They were amazing. I’m reading her book, My Life in France, right now. What an awesome lady.

I went to college in Boston, (love its history) began my public relations career at Lord & Taylor in Copley Square, spent a lot of my dates at Fenway Park and was proposed to by my husband near the Swan Boats in Boston Garden. ( Hubby grew up in Westborough) It’s my favorite city in the US – only wish it was less expensive to live in! Thank you again and blessings,

First I would like to thank you for following my page. So far from the quick glimpses I have had of your blog there is a nice array and variety of recipes to go through and am looking forward to it. I must ask which restaurants or types you had worked in as over the past couple years I had given some thought about going back to school for culinary but I feel I would have the same issue you did in regards to the repetitive nature of the business, I typically like to wake up every day and just kind of be creative on a fairly normal basis.

Hello, If you want to be creative everyday then you need to open your own place. I haven’t worked in a restaurant in years…. (recently a small café for a few years where I was allowed to be creative) I don’t know what its like now to work in a big restaurant, from what I hear if you’re the chef you can create all you like, and it would also depend what kind of chef you would worked under and what he would allow… I suggest before investing money in culinary school work in a restaurant for a bit…see if you like it because its not easy. I found restaurant work grueling,…. On the other hand Julia Child went to Culinary School with no intention of working in a restaurant… so I guess just be clear on what you want….or just be creative in your own kitchen and have people over for dinner, or eat it all yourself or find a homeless person to give your meals too…or send them to me.
